Xylem UK has been recognised with three major industry awards for its advanced river monitoring technologies that support UK utilities in meeting requirements under the Environment Act 2021 The awards also reflect the growing importance of digital solutions in driving compliance, resilience, and improved water quality across the sector.

At the Instrumentation & Electronics (I&E) Awards in London on 23 October 2025, the water technology firm received the Digital Transformation Award for monitoring sonde technology and digital tools that support continuous water quality monitoring under Section 82 of the Act. Section 82 requires utilities to monitor river water quality upstream and downstream of storm overflows and treatment works outfalls that discharge to watercourses.

Xylem’s HydroSphere platform enables AI-powered event recognition, smart alarms, GIS mapping, and customisable dashboards. It also integrates satellite imagery and digital twinning through Xylem Vue, the company’s digital water management platform supporting proactive water quality management.

At the same event, James Chapman, Xylem’s environmental solutions business development manager, was named Instrumentation Industry Personality of the Year for leading the delivery of scalable, data-driven river monitoring solutions that support regulatory compliance.

He said: “This recognition reflects the dedication of our teams at Xylem to deliver scalable, data-driven solutions that empower utilities to protect river ecosystems and meet regulatory goals. It’s a privilege to be part of this mission.”

Xylem and Anglian Water also won the Best Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring Project award at the Environmental Monitoring Awards. The joint project trialled continuous monitoring of four final effluent outfalls using Xylem’s HydroDaaS Gold data-as-a-service offering.

Data uptime of 98% was achieved via a 15-minute data transmission, with no significant sensor drift and highly accurate readings. Xylem’s Phosphate & Ammonium Process Online Analysers were also highly commended in the Excellence in Wastewater Monitoring category.

Darren Hanson, director – environmental solutions, Xylem, said: “Section 82 is driving a shift in how we monitor river health. At Xylem, we’re working closely with utilities to deliver real-time insights that drive faster, smarter decisions and accelerated response times.”

“This recognition at both the Environmental Monitoring Awards and the I&E Awards reinforces the impact of our work and the dedication of our teams in advancing innovative solutions for water monitoring. Innovation and collaboration are key to solving today’s water challenges and improving water security for communities. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

Reliable data and collaboration between utilities and technology providers are essential for improving water quality and meeting environmental standards.
