Northumbrian Water has appointed United Infrastructure as its installation partner for a major smart meter transformation programme across the North East of England.
Under a three-year contract, with an option to extend for five years, United Infrastructure will help Northumbrian Water install 750,000 smart meters, moving toward a fully smart meter portfolio by 2035. The initiative will give customers near real-time insight into their water usage, helping households and businesses conserve water and reduce bills, while allowing the utility to detect and repair leaks faster, minimising waste and service disruptions.
Scott Beard, Managing Director, Water, United Infrastructure, said: “We are delighted to have been appointed by Northumbrian Water to deliver this transformational smart meter programme, which will deliver improvements for Northumbrian Water’s customers and the sustainability of future water supplies.”
He added that the award is built upon a long-term relationship with their client, suggesting it as a testament to United Infrastructure’s smart metering capabilities
Gary Adams, Head of Metering, Northumbrian Water, added: “This partnership is a key step in our journey to help our customers better understand and manage their water use, while protecting this precious resource for future generations.”
United Infrastructure’s engineering team will provide end-to-end services, including planning, scheduling, installation, and integration with core IT systems. The firm has supported Northumbrian Water since 2005, maintaining the network and ensuring a water supply across the region.
The rollout is part of a wider trend in the UK and Europe toward smart infrastructure and digital utilities.
